Amazon – Free App of the Day: X-Men

May 6th, 2012

For those of you who own Android smartphones, many of you are probably aware that you can download and install a secondary app store to your phone aside from Google Play. The second app store is actually through Amazon who runs a Free App of the Day every day. Yesterday being Free Comic Book Day, perhaps they decided to give a little as today’s Free App is the X-Men game.

Based off the screen shots available on their site and experience with this game, it looks to me as if this is the same game we loved to play for the Sega Genesis way back when that has now been ported over for Android devices. Be advised, iPhoners, this game is also available for your device as well (I have it on my iPad).

To download and install the Amazon App Store, visit this link, Amazon App Store, and then to right of the screen you’ll see where it says “Get Started”. After you’ve entered your email or mobile number, follow the easy instructions and you’re done! Otherwise I’m sure you can just Google the Amazon App Store APK that way and PRESTO! Every day they have a new app so be advised to check it daily – if you care enough. Some days the apps they offer for free are only $1 to begin with. A few times they’ve offered apps that are $30 for free.

In the mean time, download their app store and then download X-men – it’s a win/win.

Follow A Nerd – Steampunk Boba Fett

April 18th, 2012

Bringing you the best of steampunk and Star Wars, I present to you Steampunk Boba Fett!

As taken from his Facebook:

“Steampunk Boba Fett (John F. Strangeway) is one of the most recognized figures in both the Steampunk and Star Wars fan communities. He had the idea for a Steampunk variation for quite some time but lacked the resources to build the suit to match his vision. That changed at AnachroCon 2009, where he met Matt Silva of Penny Dreadful Productions. A few months later, PDP began work on the suit, which debuted at Dragon*Con 2009 to overwhelming acclaim. John and Matt are featured prominently in the PBS documentary “Four Days at Dragon*Con.”

When he’s not portraying Steampunk Boba Fett, John serves as PR/media relations representative for Penny Dreadful Productions. He also works with Dragon*Con Media Relations, appearing on Better Mornings Atlanta and 11 Alive in 2010.

John’s ultimate stance and goal as a prominent Steampunk icon is to keep the fires of unity and creativity within the Steampunk communities roaring. Reminding Steampunks that you are only limited in how far, fun, and fantastic being Steampunk can be by your own hands and mind. Keeping humor alive and bringing a positive outlook and energy to every event he attends. Now a guest of several conventions, John F. Strangeway looks forward to meeting and greeting steampunks wherever he goes!”

Mac Virii??

April 16th, 2012

So within the last couple of weeks there have been two big viruses to hit Mac users. To me, this is quite appalling only because of how Apple develops their products. It’s shocking to see that the latest trojan released is exploiting a MS vulnerability only because of these two big companies and how they are with security. Now of course this wouldn’t be the first time MS has let something go in their code and left a wide open door for hackers but with the allure that Macs are impervious to viruses, this is getting a little out of hand.

For those of you who weren’t aware, the last virus actually attacked computers using an unknown language via a Java vulnerability. Now, Flash I could understand – no offense Adobe: I love you guys – but seriously though, Flash has been known for being insecure and is one of the reasons why Apple wants nothing to do with it on their tablets.

I can’t even remember the last time I had a virus on my Windows laptop let alone heard of any such massive attack. It’s definitely been quite some time but to be completely honest, nobody really sends me attachments via email. Those that do are creating the documents themselves – not forwarding them on. I’m also not stupid and can spot a fake email a mile away – after the Melissa virus aka “I love you” virus, if you had used a computer at that point and had an internet connection you should have been prepared for anything after that.

This just is common sense people. I’m highly disappointed in Microsoft and Oracle (Sun) for dropping the ball on this. Granted, I realize it’s nearly impossible for every gap to be closed but when you are as experienced as MS and Oracle, you are expected of more.

Listed below are the two best articles I could find about this for those wanting more information – both are from Gizmodo. The first link is regarding the first virus and the second link has information about the latest virus which if I had to guess, had been released from the same person/group.

Gaming Til You “O!”

April 12th, 2012

After hearing about this online pen and paper game for a couple of months from my coworkers, I finally decided to join them to see what was going on with this game. Constant talk of “expeditions” and ” small pets from a unknown marsh planet” (sound familiar anyone) got me a little interested. I will say at first that it didn’t sound like a whole lot but it reminded me of the old game that’s very similar to this that I had played back in 2002 called “Planetarium”. No idea what happened to that game but I stopped playing because my friends did.

At any rate, I’ve gone from the rank of 1000 and I’m now ranked 591 with the help of my alliance and my previous experience playing these games. There is a cool tutorial that you can do that will give you free things for completing that particular set of requirements which can help you when you first start out. It would be also a good idea to join with some friends or if you don’t have any friends that are interested, create an account and message someone to see if you can join their alliance.

This game has been a lot of fun so far with all of the espionage and attacks but otherwise can be frustrating such as when you send out an expedition and it’s attacked by pirates or you blow an o-ring and they have to return. All in all, I recommend it and I’m glad that they talked me into joining. Check it out for yourself below at the source.

Happy…!

April 8th, 2012

Easter!! Or for those of you that may not celebrate Easter and are a little nerdy, I wish you a happy Lich Jesus Day!

Some friends and I had discussed the merits of “Zombie Jesus Day” as some people celebrate but I was sent a graphic by my friend Zach to clarify this. Jesus is not a zombie – he would be a lich.

So. There we have it.

Now, for those of you who celebrate Easter: This is one of my favorite images and the designer’s link is below as the source. Now, get your ham, turkey, lamb, whatever it is that you do on Easter on.

Google Maps NES Style

March 31st, 2012

So I’ve been a lot more lax with posts as I don’t want to clutter this up with a bunch of non-sense. Initially I had found quite a few links that I thought were pretty cool and decided to share. This one is no different but definitely worthy of a post.

Google has apparently decided that their April Fools joke was going to be rendering Google Maps into an 8-bit version therefore looking like you’re playing the Legend of Zelda. Pretty sweet if you ask me. Below is a pic of the US in 8-bit. Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear the original Legend of Zelda calling me to blow into it’s sweet, sweet cartridge so that I can play for the rest of the weekend…
